FAQs About Home Heating and Energy Efficiency

  • What are BTU's?

BTUs (British Thermal Units) are a standard of measurement that represents the heat value of any type of energy used to create heat. The amount of fuel that an appliance will consume per hour is calculated with the BTU value of the fuel it uses to determine the input of that appliance. BTU values of any type of energy are determined by the actual amount of heat required to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

  • Why is a programmable thermostat so important?

A Programmable thermostat can cut heating costs by another 10% by maintaining a more accurate temperature. They also keep the house at a lower temperature when you are not home and at night.

  • Why do I need a furnace inspection?

A- furnace inspection is preventative maintenance for your furnace; a furnace requires cleaning once a year to remain in good operational standing and to prove service history on your equipment. Our technicians are trained and skilled in detecting future issues.

AFU- 95+ standards have been updated to ensure that all furnaces are 95% or more nowadays.

  • What does AFUE stand for, and why should this matter to me?

AFUE means Annual Fuel Utilization Rating. This is a rating on how efficiently a gas appliance converts fuel to energy. If your furnace has an AFUE rating of 90%, that means that 90% of the fuel is utilized to provide heat for your home, and 10% escapes up your chimney. So the higher the AFUE rating, the more energy conservation, and less your fuel bill will be.

  • How often should I change my filter?

With a standard Throwaway filter, it is recommended that you replace it every month. Anything else is by the manufacturer's instructions.

  • I paid for a warranty. Why do I have to pay for a furnace inspection?

A warranty only covers parts and labor, not preventative maintenance. A furnace inspection is the responsibility of the equipment owner. Different manufacturers require a yearly furnace inspection to keep the warranty valid.
